Our founder's spotlight series continues with Desofy.
What is Desofy?
The first Web3 social media mobile app built on top of the DeSo blockchain. You can download it now on either Android or IOS.
Desofy allows you to cross-post to DeSo and Twitter at the same time eliminating the need to rebuild an audience from scratch. It comes standard with all the money-native features that DeSo provides.
Desofy is everything that Elon Musk wants Twitter to be.
What’s your background?
I observed Web3 from a distance without building in the space while working at a German Saas company. It wasn’t until DeSo launched that I realized it was possible to build a Web3 version of Twitter on a blockchain.
DeSo felt unique in that it solved a different set of problems than DeFi while also appealing to multiple audiences.
People have a hard time understanding DeFi because finance is boring. While finance affects everyone, the learning curve is steep and most people don’t want to deal with it.
Yet, almost everyone uses social media to stay connected to the world, build a brand, or for networking purposes. Therefore, Web3 social media has a much bigger upside when it comes to crypto mass adoption.
This motivated me to start building my first project on DeSo.
I started Desofy as my first entrepreneurial venture, and it became one of the most popular apps on DeSo.
What are you building on DeSo?
Desofy is one of the first decentralized social media mobile app experiences in Web3.
The cool thing about building on DeSo is that you own your content and social graph. This means your content is stored on-chain, and no one can remove it.
There are a lot of challenges that come along with building a great mobile experience in Web3. We’ve solved most of those issues with Desofy and continue to make improvements.
DeSo is much easier to build on compared to other chains. Your Web2 skill set translates easily to building Web3 applications on DeSo.
Desofy also supports all the money-native features of the DeSo blockchain.
This includes social tipping, social tokens, and social NFTs.
Why did you choose DeSo?
On DeSo there isn't a cold start problem when building an app. It's 100% open source so anyone can build on an already established code base.
Web2 social media closed its doors to developers to protect their ads-driven revenue model.
You also don't have access to their data or any sort of transparency as to how their algorithm works.
DeSo solves problems in both Web2 and Web3 social media allowing builders to focus on great UX.
Web3 social media apps are difficult to build and scale on any other blockchain due to speed, cost, and storage constraints. Social media presents different needs than financial applications when storing data.
DeSo solved this by creating a layer-1 blockchain designed for decentralized social media.
It’s custom-built for infinite-state applications, which means storage scales as more content is created.
What do you like about building on DeSo?
DeSo is the only blockchain that makes it possible to build a Web3 social media app with Web2 knowledge.
That's why in a few short months over 200 apps were built on DeSo. As a result, engineers can accelerate the process of building the next great social media app without having to learn a new coding language.
Instead, you can focus on creating a better user experience.
Allowing engineers to build in Web3 with a Web2 skill set accelerates the blockchain innovation cycle.
Which gets us closer to the next killer app that can bring millions of users to DeSo.
Lastly, the community is always willing to give you feedback, allowing builders to iterate and improve products in real-time.
What are some use cases for your app?
Imagine a Web3 mobile version of Twitter, and you can start to understand all the different use cases. There are multiple ways you can earn on Desofy.
Additionally, you can cross-post from Desofy to Twitter, so you only have to use one app.
So, you can monetize your content on DeSo without having to rebuild your Twitter audience from scratch.
Desofy allows you to own your content and social graph and offers unique tools to monetize your content. As a result, you don’t need to worry about being de-platformed for countering a narrative or calling out big tech.
We also value your privacy and don’t collect any unnecessary data, nor do you get served irrelevant ads.
Why is building out decentralized social media important?
Today, social media is more centralized than the financial industry when Bitcoin was invented.
Decentralized social media puts the power back into the hands of the founders, builders, and creators.
This is important because current social media lacks innovation and competition. DeSo changes that by decentralizing social media and storing it all on-chain.
DeSo is having the same impact on social media that Bitcoin had on the financial system.
