The DeSo ecosystem is booming with activity despite the current bear market. With so much going on, it's sometimes hard to keep track of everything.
Because of that, we've decided to commit to a regular series highlighting some of the most exciting updates, app launches, and advancements on the DeSo blockchain.
While it may seem quiet due to the macro backdrop and sideways price action, it's not a reflection of what's happening in the greater web3 social media ecosystem.
We're at the very start of an innovation cycle in decentralized social media, which will only accelerate through the bear market. Many great projects are built during bear markets, and this cycle won't be any different.
If you have anything to submit for future updates, don't hesitate to contact Ty or Ash on Diamond.
What's New With DeSo Tech
Hypersync is now live!
As you begin to understand the nuts and bolts of this blockchain advancement, you'll be blown away by how it all works.
You can watch a video interview with Hypersync creator Piotr Nojszewski and DeSo developer advocate Ty Fischer.
Or watch a 5-minute breakdown of Hypersync from Jacob Van.
A faster-syncing blockchain opens the door for more ecosystem innovation and decentralization.
Here are some key highlights from this revolutionary blockchain upgrade.
Snapshot creation and maintenance
A crucial part of Hypersync is Ancestral Records which are trimmed down versions of snapshots that remove irrelevant data from the node sync to speed up the process.
Ancestral records can immediately determine what data needs to be stored and removed based on the transaction signature unique to DeSo.
Peer messages are used for requesting and sending snapshot data. One of the main features is multi-peer synchronization, which allows a node to simultaneously download different categories of data from other nodes.
In addition, Hypersync is smart enough to close that connection and replace it with a different peer if a peer in multi-peer sync is slow, inconsistent, or going down.
EllipticSum replaces the traditional way of verifying data from a peer node with a novel approach, eliminating the Merkle Tree object and replacing it with a much smaller object.
Previously the Deso Merkle tree took up about 6-8 gigs (8589934592 bytes) out of the 60GB Deso DB.
With EllipticSum, that number drops to just 33 bytes!
DAODAO Upgrade
Derived keys and security
If someone gets ahold of your private key, all your funds can be instantly stolen. On the other hand, using derived keys allows users to allocate small amounts of their funds when using an application, while your main wallet never has to interface with it.
Derived keys also allow 3rd party apps to only use a derived key for a specific transaction. For example, it will enable a Twitter clone to only post and like things or a finance app only to move funds around.
Derived keys use cases
Derived keys open up a slew of new possibilities never previously available.
Submit transactions while offline with conditional calls
What if you bet $100 on the Bucks beating the Celtics in game 7. Depending on the game's outcome, a DeSo app could be authorized to give or take 100 dollars from a pre-approved derived key.
As a creator, you can pre-write articles or content, and you can authorize derived keys to post the content on a schedule instead of manually having to do it. You can also allow a financial management app to move around funds that you pre-approved with a derived key.
You can now share encrypted messages by authorizing a pair of derived keys so that anyone with these keys can decrypt a private message. This opens the door for group messaging and a handful of other use cases.
DAOs
DAODAO has a whole list of features that no other DAO tooling has on the market and likely won't for a very long time. However, DAODAO is more than a DAO tooling kit.
It's a web3 social platform that allows you to start, fund, and trade the next big thing.
Thanks to DAODAO, web3 communities can fund and scale their next big idea.
The best comparison is Reddit + Kickstarter + Coinbase.
Here are some additional feature highlights:
Omni-Currency Support
Most DAOs currently only conduct business in ETH because that's the most built-out DAO ecosystem regarding tooling. DAODAO will allow people to contribute with any currency, starting with ETH, BTC, SOL, and DESO, and more soon to be added.
First true on-chain, non-custodial order book exchange
Current decentralized exchanges have done a lot in facilitating trading by leveraging liquidity pools.
However, they create capital inefficiency because people have to tie up large amounts of capital to provide liquidity.
Order book exchanges are more efficient but haven't been possible to implement on-chain due to their onerous storage requirements. DAODAO is the first true on-chain order-book exchange for DAO coins called DAOSwap.
Other features include:
- One-click distributions to DAO-holders
- One-click social DAOs
- On-chain social content
- On-chain social identity
- Omni-currency support
- The DAODAO DAO
You can see the full feature list here.
Developers now have access to DAO primitives that allow for:
- Creating a DAO and its token supply
- Transferring DAO coins
- Limit orders for DAO coins
This is huge because basically anyone can immediately list their DAO on a non-custodial exchange meaning no legal issues. It also opens the door for tons of liquidity for other tokens and easy access for any user to buy the token.
It's comparable to Uniswap and ERC20s, but instead, it's a protocol-level exchange for DAOs.
DeSo Community Project Spotlight
Supernovas is a social network & NFT marketplace where you can browse and trade all Deso NFTs and Ethereum NFTs minted on Supernovas.
They have excellent UX and are creating a DAO through DAODAO, which you can invest in now and get early access to.
You can check out their roadmap here.
Supernovas V1 includes the following features:
- Refreshed UI
- New user profiles
- New post threads
- New navigation
- New mobile experience
- New home page
- New wallet
- New discovery page features
- Multi-chain NFT marketplace
Additionally, Ethereum implementation with Solana is on the way with gas-free, one-click minting, and instant transactions for everyone.
You'll also be able to import your Ethereum NFTs to your profile with a connected wallet.
DeSo Community Apps
New apps continue to pop up in the DeSo ecosystem while already established apps push exciting new updates.
NFTz
There were several huge announcements from the NFTz team.
NFTs can now be minted in 3D (high quality and/or animated) directly on NFTz, which can then be interacted with in full 3D and/or virtual reality with your VR headsets.
3D assets for NFTs minted will soon be able to upload directly to Arweave free of charge during beta directly.
More decentralized options are also just around the corner.
The NFTz team also teased about expanding outside of the DeSo blockchain, having solved considerable hurdles in the NFT community. This includes enticing people to join the DeSo blockchain.
A press release is circulating now.
Vibehut
Founder of Vibehut Chris Dolinski announced a few major upgrades.
Vibehut will now have group calls in breakout room style with up to 16 people in a call.
Group chats will now have full-screen sharing. There will also be token gated and password-required rooms and login with Twitter and Metamask.
For EventSo there will also be a section to highlight upvoted and promoted events, a leaderboard to see who is finding the best events, iCal and gCal subscriptions, and 1-click events by adding the EventSo bookmarklet.
DeSo daily deals
Nathan Wells created DeSo Daily Deals to help you find reputable creators who recently saw a price drop.
DeSo users can get a larger stake in their favorite creator coins. A recent upgrade is a diamond paywall where you need to tip one diamond to unlock the daily generated list.
Paying a minimum of 1 diamond is cheap enough where anyone can do it but also a solid business model as DeSo scales to 1 Billion users.
TikTok on DeSo?
Stori is a decentralized social app built on the DeSo blockchain. People can post videos similar to what you can post on TikTok.
You can share your stori for 24 hours or post it to the storiboard forever!
The more you post on Stori the more you can earn. Brands will also be able to apply to sell NFTs on the Stori marketplace.
Desofy
The first decentralized social network mobile app powered by DeSo. A recent upgrade allows you to post to DeSo and Twitter simultaneously.
So while the Twitter and Elon face-off continues, Desofy is a welcome solution to people who want to start bridging their audience over to DeSo and earn while posting.
DeSo lacks a great mobile app, so Desofy is a welcome addition to fill that gap.
Cordify
Speaking of cross-posting on Twitter, You can now post your tweets directly on DeSo while using Twitter by providing read access using cordify.
All you need is to tag @postOnDeso in your tweet, and the magic of our code will do the rest!
Zirkels
Zirkels is the next-generation ad-free blogging that pays you real money every day thanks to the power of the Deso blockchain.
Think Medium for web3.
Astronation
Astronation is a virtual reality open world game where you can interact in real-time with other inhabitants of an endless star system. A recent upgrade saw an alpha VR client come out with structures for several community-operated start stations.
DeSo Community Tooling
Deso-protocol library has been upgraded to support DAODAO. Changes include hooking in all the endpoints from the DAODAO hard fork.
The deso-protocol-types library also received an update to include all DAODAO requests and responses.
Additionally, the library now supports all media endpoints, so uploading images and videos and converting TikTok to desktop consumable formats is now available.
NPM stats show the library recently hit 1500+ downloads. However, looking at other finite-state chain like stellar lumens, they only have 278.
If you are looking to use or learn more about the library, you can get started at hub.deso.org.
DeSo Hub
The hub now supports its decentralized message board for troubleshooting issues. Users are also rewarded for asking questions or responding to questions with diamonds.
The DeSo hub is wholly decentralized and entirely stored on the DeSo chain.
